Built in the late 1860's by a Scottish spice merchant, the first owners origins are reflected by the crenellated tower above the master suite and the prince of wales feathers in the fretwork above the sitting room doors. This hilltop colonial mansion over looking Galle harbour would have allowed him to see clippers arriving from his native country. It has had several incarnations since, from family home to a bank.

The current owner is an Englishman, who fell under Serendip's spell over ten years ago. He began searching for a suitable site in the South to develop a small luxury hotel , the goal being to create a special place that would offer comfort, yet retain local charm and elegance.

There are two gardens: the fragrant frangipani ("temple tree") garden leading to the swimming pool and the mango garden which faces a stunning view of the harbour. During the renovation, little was changed structurally, a great deal was repaired. The challenge was to renovate yet keep the old style and elegant charm that befits the place.

All the bathrooms are now new and finished in pure and simple white.

The living rooms were knocked into one and have become the heart of the house where at the end of the day our guests can browse through the somewhat eclectic selection of books, sink into a relaxing sofa, listen to whatever music takes their fancy while enjoying a pot of up country tea or perhaps something a little stronger like the Sun House Sour or a Dark and Stormy!

Meals can be taken in either the dining room, on one of the house's verandahs or in the garden under the mango tree.

We have six bedrooms for guests one of which has been described as the most beautiful room in the world , by an enthusiastic journalist.

The Sun House is the perfect base from which to explore the southern coast....or to simply relax, unwind, sunbathe and eat well!
